Eggers used the movie as a re-imagining of Icelandic sagas and Viking legends, just like the Scandinavian legend of Amleth. The story includes a younger prince searching for revenge on his uncle for murdering his father and stealing his mom, which served as the premise for Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
