XXL celebrates 50 years of hip-hop with this second:

Aug. 20, 2002: In 1999, Pusha-T and Malice a.okay.a. Clipse have been primed to launch their debut album, Unique Audio Footage, on Elektra Data. Their debut single, “The Funeral,” featured manufacturing by the red-hot manufacturing crew, the Neptunes, and the group appeared like one among rap’s can’t-miss prospects. Sadly, the one flopped commercially and their album was shelved indefinitely. Subsequently, Pusha and Malice have been launched from their contract shortly after.

A couple of years later, the Neptunes had opened up their new imprint, Star Trak Leisure, with Arista Data and one among their first signings was Clipse, the rap duo they’d labored with a couple of years prior on their debut. After returning to the studio, the end result was Lord Willin’, a coke rap basic, which was launched on today in 2002.

Lord Willin’ was a minimalist, space-aged basic of the burgeoning coke rap style–a style devoted to the lives of the gritty and typically glamorized lives of drug sellers. Powered by the Neptunes’ icy manufacturing and Clipse’s tales of recent avenue noir, Lord Willin’ would grow to be their first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart. A mature however usually ruthless assortment, the rap tandem handled the themes of guilt, generational dysfunction and the over-glamorization of drug dealing together with bringing an album stuffed with songs for each the golf equipment and the streets.

Clipse would achieved industrial success with Lord Willin’. The LP produced basic tracks akin to “Virginia,” “When the Final Time,” “Cot Rattling” and the immediately iconic music “Grindin.'” Shockingly, the challenge has solely reached gold standing, in line with the Recording Trade Affiliation of America.

After dropping two extra critically-acclaimed albums, the group disbanded. Pusha T went on to pursue a solo profession and dubbed himself “Cocaine’s Dr. Seuss,” whereas Malice reinvented himself as No Malice and started selling a non-secular agenda in hip-hop.
