Two branches of rock music collided when Queen got here head to head with the Intercourse Pistols in 1977.

The teams had been at very completely different phases of their respective careers. Queen was already rock royalty with multi-platinum album gross sales and hits reminiscent of “Killer Queen,” “Any person to Love” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” In the meantime, the Intercourse Pistols had been the rambunctious upstarts, poster boys for punk, which was then the most well liked new fad in rock.

In December of 1976, Queen pulled out of a tv look on the London-area journal present Tonight. The Intercourse Pistols changed them, leading to some of the notorious interviews in tv historical past.

So maybe it was destiny that introduced each acts to Wessex Sound Studios on the similar time within the late summer time of ‘77. The teams had been working in separate studios, however that didn’t cease Freddie Mercury and Sid Vicious from sparking a short rivalry.

Johnny Rotten Crawled As much as Freddie Mercury

Queen was busy engaged on what would turn into Information of the World when their preliminary uninvited visitor stopped by. Their first Intercourse Pistols customer was not Vicious, however reasonably John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten. Based on Queen roadie Peter Hince, the frontman “crawled on all fours throughout our studio as much as the facet of the piano, mentioned, ‘Whats up Freddie,’ and left on all fours.”

Invoice Value, the engineer who was working with the Intercourse Pistols on their debut album on the time, knew this in all probability wasn’t a wise transfer.

“Johnny got here again and mentioned, ‘I have been to see Freddie,'” Value recalled within the BBC cocumentary collection Traditional Albums. “And as he mentioned it, there was a faucet on the door, Queen’s producer mentioned, ‘Freddie was enjoying piano. One of many band members simply crawled on all fours throughout our studio as much as the facet of the piano, mentioned, ‘Whats up Freddie,’ and left on all fours. May you be sure that he would not do it once more?'”

Regardless of the unusual conduct, Lydon had not less than been well mannered. Certainly, Brian Could later recalled the Intercourse Pistols singer “was at all times very respectful” after they crossed paths. Vicious, then again, was not.

Freddie Mercury Put Sid Vicious in His Place

“Sooner or later we had been within the management room and Fred was sat on the desk,” Hince recalled. “And all of a sudden we heard this voice, and it was Sid Vicious who had are available in, and he was clearly the more severe for put on. And he known as into the room, ‘Have you ever succeeded in bringing ballet to the lots but?'”

Vicious’ query was a reference to a then-recent NME interview by which Mercury had expressed his love of ballet. The Queen frontman was unamused by the bassist’s quip.

“Oh, sure, Simon Ferocious,” Mercury responded. “We’re attempting our greatest, pricey.” He then reportedly started flicking the security pins on Vicious’ jacket and commenting on the punk’s look. When the bassist stepped in the direction of Mercury, the singer reportedly declared, “What are you gonna do about it?”

“Fred went up, took him by the lapels and pushed him out the door,” Hince remembered.

“[Vicious] hated the truth that I may even communicate like that,” Mercury recalled in an interview following the incident (accessible above). “I feel we survived that take a look at.”

“Sid got here in. Sid was a moron, you already know. He was an fool,” Roger Taylor gleefully added a long time later.

After all, that did not cease the Intercourse Pistols bassist from operating his mouth. A few months after the incident, Vicious gave an interview to BBC Radio One. “I noticed Freddie Mercury within the flesh,” the rocker declared. “Photos cannot convey how revolting that bloke is. He is completely hideous. He is like an outdated Turk. He is received an amazing huge blue shadow that comes proper as much as underneath his eyes. And this disgusting voice. And he warbles away about, ‘Oh, the ballet is all good this season.’ He is completely terrible. I’ve by no means met anybody like him.”
