Killer Mike on the ’80s: No-Rules Hip Hop and Bad Hair

For rapper Killer Mike, the ’80s was essentially the most impactful decade of sound. Sitting down with SPIN and Bose as a part of our A long time of Sound collaboration, Killer Mike shares his ideas on the eclectic and rule-breaking period.

“For my part, the ’80s gave you the whole lot,” Killer Mike says, “from new wave, heavy hardcore redefined by Metallica, the musings of NWA and a couple of Dwell Crew, and, man, the aptitude my mother cherished from George Michael.”

Hip hop was arising as a scene and style through the tail finish of the last decade, and Killer Mike explains that it was when hip hop “didn’t have guidelines.” If he’d been an artist through the ’80s, Killer Mike says being a part of laying down hip hop’s roots would’ve been what he’d cherished most.

Killer Mike additionally shares, with a giggle, what he wouldn’t have preferred about being a musician through the ’80s — the hair.

Be part of us by means of the A long time of Sound, listening to from impactful artists about their favourite eras of music in celebration of Bose’s sixtieth anniversary.
