When the Go-Go’s scored successful with their 1982 single “Trip,” the tune’s music video turned an MTV mainstay. Little did viewers know, the band was “cross-eyed drunk” whereas filming the clip.

The tune was initially penned by the band’s bassist, Kathy Valentine, a number of years prior. She’d loved a short romance with a younger man whereas on a visit, and wrote the tune’s preliminary lyrics on the airplane trip residence.

“The brief romance had softened me, and the phrases, written from true-life longing, resonated ceaselessly,” Valentine later recalled in her memoir.

The bassist had been in a gaggle known as the Textones, and it was they who initially launched “Trip” in 1979. The tune garnered little consideration on the time, and Valentine joined the Go-Go’s in 1980.

The band’s 1981 LP, Magnificence and the Beat, was an enormous success, going two occasions platinum and scoring a pair of High 20 hits. When the Go-Go’s went to work on their 1982 follow-up, Valentine steered revisiting “Trip.”

“We actually cherished the tune, however it did not actually have a refrain,” Go-Go’s co-founder Jane Wiedlin recalled to SongFacts. “So Charlotte [Caffey] and I ended up working with Kathy somewhat bit extra on the tune, and type of Go-Go-fying it, principally including the refrain.”

Launched June 26, 1982, “Trip” would develop into the title monitor and first single from the group’s second album. And whereas making its music video, the Go-Go’s bought somewhat goofy.

“It was a big-budget video as a result of by that point we have been actually common,” Wiedlin defined. “So we had some huge cash to do the video, which was the primary time for us, as a result of the opposite movies we simply spent, like $5,000 on or one thing. It was enjoyable, however it was a manner of working that we weren’t accustomed to. And I bear in mind it being a very lengthy day, like a 14-hour day, and about eight hours into it all of us have been getting actually bored and stressed, so we began ingesting.”

“We drank champagne. Plenty of champagne. Heaps,” Valentine admitted within the guide I Need My MTV.

The clip featured the band in two places – an airport terminal, and waterskiing in formation. The latter was staged utilizing a blue display screen — an already tacky medium that the band’s inebriation solely enhanced.

“By the point they shot the scene the place we’re on the water skis, snowboarding one-handed and waving and stuff, we have been all actually looped,” Wiedlin confessed. “It is so humorous, for those who have a look at us, look in our eyes in these components, we’re all like cross-eyed drunk.”

“Trip” peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard chart, scoring the Go-Go’s yet one more hit. Nevertheless, behind the scenes fame was starting to have an have an effect on on the group, and the Trip album was met with decrease gross sales and blended crucial critiques in comparison with its predecessor. “Trip” could be the Go-Go’s last tune to achieve the High 10, and by ’85 the group had disbanded.
