Three years in the past right now, on Feb. 22, 2021, Daft Punk rattled the world with the announcement the duo was breaking apart after 28 years collectively. The French icons have since marked the anniversary of this event by releasing a trinket from the huge Daft Punk vault on Feb. 22 within the two years since.
And that date has come round once more. To rejoice their unparalleled legacy, the French duo is screening its 2003 movie, Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, on its Twitch channel right now. The screening begins exactly at 5:22 p.m. ET.
Overseen by Japanese animation legend Leiji Matsumoto and written and scored by Daft Punk’s Man-Manuel de Homem Christo and Thomas Bangalter, Interstella 5555 is an hour-long “area opera” finishing the story begun by the movies of singles “One Extra Time,” “Aerodynamic,” “Digital Love” and “More durable Higher Quicker Stronger,” all from the duo’s era-defining 2001 album, Discovery.
In these movies, an evil impresario kidnaps and brainwashes an extra-terrestrial rock group, transforms them into prefabricated pop stars, brings them again to Earth and manipulates them to the highest of the charts. Every “motion” of this silent movie is accompanied by a monitor from Discovery.
“The mission was born in 2000, after we flew out to Tokyo with an hour of music and our personal script,” Bangalter mentioned upon the movie’s launch in 2003. “Leiji gave us a heat reception, and after listening to the music, he got here on board instantly. Three years later, our dream has come true.”
When it comes to comeback rumblings, the French duo was mentioned to be taking part in the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony, a rumor that was rapidly shot down by their crew final fall. The pair did kinda sorta satiate the continued public demand for contemporary Daft Punk materials by releasing the “drumless” version of 2013 traditional Random Entry Recollections in November, at the side of the album’s 10-year anniversary.
