With a flurry of guitars, propulsive drumming and frenzied vocals from frontman Eddie Vedder, “Working” is likely one of the most punk-leaning songs in Pearl Jam’s arsenal. Within the lyrics, Vedder rails in opposition to a “Dictator, love hater” who has him “operating ‘until the second coming.” The tune’s refrain brings echoes that anxiousness, as Vedder sings: “Misplaced within the tunnel and the tunnel’s getting funneled / Just like the sewage within the plumbing / ‘Trigger we left the fucking water operating.”
