Media and leisure business stakeholders have urged Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to limit its suggestions on the Nationwide Broadcasting Coverage (NBP) to the broadcasting sector and exclude non-broadcasting points like OTT, on-line gaming, movie, and music as they’re past its remit. Stakeholders just like the Indian Broadcasting and Digital Basis (IBDF) and the Web and Cell Affiliation of India (IAMAI) have urged the telecom regulator to restrict its suggestions on the NBP to points raised by the ministry of data and broadcasting (MIB) in its reference letter to Trai.

In its session paper ‘Inputs for the Formulation of Nationwide Broadcasting Coverage-2024’ dated April 2, Trai has sought stakeholder suggestions on regulatory points and coverage measures that the federal government ought to undertake to spice up over-the-top (OTT), movie, music, and on-line gaming.

‘Broadcasting Policy Must Exclude OTT’

Final month, TRAI chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti stated at a public occasion that NBP suggestions shall be issued by the top of Might. “The regulator’s function is to make sure equal alternatives for all gamers with none discrimination,” he had stated at AVIA’s Way forward for Video India convention in Mumbai.

“Trai has gone past its remit to incorporate points which can be past its jurisdiction. The MIB reference to Trai, which has not been disclosed within the session paper, primarily offers with points regarding the broadcasting sector,” stated a senior govt at a number one media firm. In its July 2023 reference to Trai, the ministry requested the regulator give suggestions on points like definition of broadcasting within the OTT age, infrastructure sharing, viewers measurement, framework for public broadcasting, and promotion of native content material.
